I lost my first baby at around 10-week’s gestation and had no anchor to keep me from being swept into the tsunami of grief.

Nothing. Nada.

Oh, sure, I believed in God, but I didn’t know Him as my rock, my strength, my all-in-all. So when Sarah died, waves of grief controlled me. Darkness engulfed me. I was lost in death and didn’t know how to live again.

And then grace!

The Lord met me at my lowest. When I was certain to drown, He reached beneath the surface and lifted me up.

But oh, how it could have been so much easier. Not less painful; losing a baby can never be less of that. But easier in the sense of knowing empathy and understanding, hope and companionship.

The empathy and understanding only the Father can know in the death of His own Son. The hope and companionship only Jesus Christ can bring.

Don’t Wait: Press Into the Lord Now!

If only I would have known Him for all those things before I became desperate. In the years since that first tsunami nearly did me in, I’ve come to know this God I profess. I’ve learned to press into Him during the in-between times, which strengthens me during the turbulent ones.

When babies 4, 5, 7, and finally 8 passed into the arms of their Creator before I could see them, the pain seared and the waves soared, but each successive time I stayed afloat a little higher, I stayed moored a bit tighter.

Believe me, I still questioned. I still screamed. My mind still struggled to comprehend the reality of my loss. Yet, I had a lifeline that I lacked with baby Sarah.

I had seen the faithfulness of God in the in-between times. I had grown to know Him during the calm. I had learned to trust Him.

So when sweet baby #6 came with a body and mind formed differently, I had a life raft to ride in. Oh the storm still soaked me, still does toss me around from time to time as I raise Miss Rachel. But I now have a confidence that never existed during the time the storms first began.

A Secure Confidence

My hope is now certain, not dependent on any circumstance but secured in the love and grace of my Savior. This certainty is only possible when you know your God.

When you have learned to trust Him in the mist and fog.

When you understand His promises and believe unequivocally that they are for you to claim as your own.

So, dear friends, don’t wait to get to know your Lord. Don’t be content to simply know of Him. Don’t only give Him an hour on Sundays or worse yet, the hour on an occasional holiday.

Draw near now, even if the sea looks calm. Dive into His Word and get to know Him and His love for you.

Then when the eye of the storm heads directly for you, which it may well do, your life raft will be waiting, your anchor will be secure, your hope will be certain.

Press into your Lord now and know a confidence not even death can shake.

I would have died in my affliction.” Psalm 119:92, CSB

Reflections: What would an unshakable confidence mean for you? How can you begin growing in the Lord today?
