He Became a Man [Happy Birthday]

Yesterday (Wednesday) my boy became a man. Daniel turned 18. I’m truly not sure how we got here so quickly.

Wasn’t it just last month we were teaching him to walk … last week he was starting school … last night he attended fifth-grade camp?

Our Firstborn

The son who put me through 23 hours of labor, gave us gray hair the hour he was born, and compelled me to check myself out of the hospital much sooner than I should have to visit him in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at a neighboring facility.

The baby who cried through meals; who projectile vomited on anyone within 10 feet; and who insisted he was not sleeping through the night (I won that battle).

The little boy with curly brown hair and blue eyes who resisted therapy but still regained considerable function of his lower arm; who was taken out for fresh air and a walk daily; who loved to be read to; and who spoke early and often.

The child who endured forearm breaking and lengthening and subsequent experimental surgery with incredible poise, bordering on joy; who loved to visit his doctor; and who absorbed books faster than the library could keep up.

The teenager who accepted news of his autoimmune disorder with grace belying his years; who has always been polite and respectful; who challenged himself academically while working just hard enough to earn distinction; who can’t get enough of debating political, philosophical, and Christian points; and who teased (still does) his sister incessantly, to her delight.

He Became a Man

The young man who spends his summers lifeguarding and teaching swim lessons; who loves his Lord; who enjoys playing games with his brothers and helping in video production; and who will soon be traveling 8 hours away to attend the college he prayed for.

Daniel initiated us on how to be a parent through wonderful moments and difficult ones. He has been a tremendous blessing to our family.

As he prepares to face the world head on, it seems only right I should impart a few words of wisdom.

But what do I say to a boy who taught his mother the value of being in the Word every day? What advice do I give to a young man who showed the one whose job it is to nurture him how to hurt well? What words can I leave to my son who encourages me to courageously follow God’s calling?

Words of Wisdom to My Son

Still I need to try, so here goes:

Danny, it is hard to believe you are 18 and will soon be off to college! You will have many new experiences as you depart on this adventure. We are excited to see your new life unfold. But since neither Mrs. K nor your parents can accompany you on this next phase, there are some things I feel compelled to remind you of (in no particular order of importance):

• Work hard, but don’t forget to find time to rest and refresh
  
• Do not procrastinate—okay, only a little (Mrs. K would like this one)
• Love everyone
• Loathe sin
• Cultivate relationships
• Stay true to who God made you to be
• Continue your practice of spending time daily with God and His Word
• Pursue Jesus Christ passionately, every day—not just on Sunday
• Follow the Holy Spirit’s guidance above all others
• And finally, return home often and contact us frequently. We are always here for you.

Happy 18th birthday Daniel! I pray you know how special you are in our eyes and God’s.
