All We Can Ask of Any Mama

It must have been lonely—those long days of caring for little ones. No Internet. No cell phones. Few neighbors. Just Mama, Daddy and us six. And early on, Dad was often gone for work.

It had to have been hard. Six children in 9 years. But what my mama did was pour her life into us.

She wasn’t perfect, but she gave us the best upbringing money couldn’t by—because there wasn’t much (money that is).

She gardened to give us good food. Canned so we could buy clothes instead of food. Laundered, cooked, cut hair, scrubbed floors, made shakes on hot days, helped unload hay, fed calves, made cookies and homemade candy, and still somehow found a few minutes to play with us. (Games are important, you know.)

She didn’t go out with the girls—no time; or buy herself a new wardrobe–no money. She even had to drag us with her to the Warehouse for groceries—no one to watch us. 

Mom and Dad scrimped and saved, schemed and went without so that we’d have wonderful gifts in celebration of  Jesus’ birthday.

What Mama did was give her children all her love. 

Isn’t that all we can ask of any mama? 

“Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: Many woman do noble things, but you surpass them all” (Proverbs 31:28-29).
