Exquisitely Tired
Once again, I am linking up with Lisa-Jo at the Gypsy Mama to participate in her 5 Minute Friday challenge. This is where we stop, drop, and write for 5 minutes straight on a subject, with no editing or going back. (Okay, this is where I have to admit, I do a little backtracking and editing. And I do go a little longer sometimes. But, I am getting better!) Today the prompt is Tired—appropriate, isn’t it?

This time of year I often think of Mary, the mother of Jesus. In my exhausted mother state, I wonder how different things were for her more than 2,000 years ago.
I can only imagine the exhaustion she experienced traveling so many miles while pregnant with her first-born. The weariness was likely no different in child birth than it is for most of us.
Then there were the trips on foot to attend the festivals and censuses, sometimes frantically searching for her lost boy. How different is that from my travels; attending ballgames, church events, and contests with my children? Often wondering where they’ve gone off too.
How weary she must have felt watching her now young man, the Messiah, experience the persecution and ridicule as He began His ministry.
And the anguish of watching Him suffer and die at the hands of His tormentors. Could I have handled it with as much grace?
Yes, Mary experienced the fullness of being a mother. The love… and the pain of mothering—just as you and I do.
Her life was ordained, blessed to be the mother of the Redeemer and Savior, encompassing all of the joys, heartaches, and exhaustion of being just that.
I can rest knowing that my life is also ordained: In this season to be a mother, a nurturer, and an encourager to my children. To experience the heartache, joys, and weariness of motherhood, in all of its fullness.
Oh, yes, I am tired! But it is an exquisite tiredness; journeying through this high calling!

“The LORD replied, ‘My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest’” (Exodus 13:14).
Reflections: Know that whatever your high calling is, it is ordained by God. Revel in that exquisite weariness that serving Him brings, and rest in Him! What is your high calling?

My arms/home will definitely feel empty when my children all leave home, Carrie. I’m already having issues and it’ll be 9 months before my first goes off to college! Looking forward to walking this path with you!
