[From the Archives] Sharing Our Story

Gold Brush Stroke

Our storyI sat with some ladies at a meeting the other day and was asked to share a little of what was going on in my life. After I finished, an elderly lady felt led to give an account of her family’s struggles. In the past year, herself, her daughter, and her granddaughter had all been diagnosed with some form of cancer.

As I listened and looked at each face around the table, it struck me that each person here had a story to tell. Strangely similar but quite different from each other. Tales of love and laughter, struggle and heartache.

We All Have a Story That Matters

Given the time and courage, each of these ladies could fill my eyes with tears, my heart with compassion, my lips with a smile.

We often think our stories are not important: They are not meaningful enough … or full of enough hardship … or pious enough. We haven’t done anything courageous or unusual. We haven’t gone on mission trips, saved someone’s life, or personally led anyone to Christ.

We may feel we’ve failed in life. We believe there is nothing of significance in our lives to impart.

But as I sat around that table, I realized that everyone of us has something of worth to share:

  • even those who haven’t passed through tragic events,
  • even those who never completed high school,
  • even those who rarely leave their homes,
  • even those who are disabled, unable to talk, or sick.
  • even those who feel inferior…

Especially all of “those.”

Your Story

God is weaving an amazing story in each one of us. A story that is uniquely you. You are playing a role that only you could fill.

You are important.

You matter.

Your story is meaningful.

Don’t be afraid to share it.

“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness in to his wonderful light” (1 Peter 2:9).

Reflections: What narrative is God writing in your life? Have you shared your story? I’d love to hear a piece of it; just leave it in the comment box below or share it with me privately by email.

Hello, I'm Julie, an imperfect wife and mother of four. Life in this broken world is not always easy. Yet, joy can be found in each day through the grace and mercy of the Lord Jesus Christ.

I find it's easy for our day's blessings to get lost in its happenings. But God's "mercies never end" (Lamentations 3:22) and His "grace is sufficient" (2 Corinthians 12:9).

May the posts and pages on this site offer you a measure of peace and encouragement.
