Find Soul Rest in the Shelter of God

When you get tired where do you long to rest?

Evening With Friends

Yesterday, some friends of ours hosted an evening get-together to celebrate a retired couple we rarely see. Grilled hamburgers and brats; relaxation on a still, shimmering lake; and valued reconnections—the evening glowed with the beauty of friendship.

Our tweens, teens, and young adults kayaked and created their own festivities while us adults, with Rachel, tooled around the small lake on a pontoon boat. Lively conversation and laughter filled the night. Rachel contributed her own joy to the gathering—bringing smiles and capturing hearts.

All too soon, stars twinkled, the moon rose, and the night grew late. My daughter signaled the end to the party by incessantly repeating the word “home.”

Although enjoying the company as well as the sights and sounds of the evening, she was exhausted and could think of only one place she desired to rest: in her bed at home.

We took the cue and made our reluctant exit. An hour later, I tucked my sweet girl snug in her bed. Rachel knew there is no place like home when weary.

No Place Like Home

That goes for spiritually as well. Jesus encouraged us to …

“Come to Me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

But which home do I strive for when I’m exhausted in my daily struggles? Do I turn to food or drink or another temporary solution or do I seek out and snuggle into the arms of my Savior?

The most expensive bed, the softest pillow, the plushest blankets won’t erase the spiritual weariness we feel as the events of daily living weigh heavy. Shopping, eating and drinking, playing—things—are only temporary balms to a shriveling soul.

We need to be refreshed by Jesus, the Living Water. When exhausted, burdened, and spiritually dry, the eternal well will endlessly quench.

Like Rachel, when I’m physically tired, I ask for home and head for my bed.

Soul Rest

But when spiritually worn, the Lord beckons us, “come.” The only sanctuary is  in Him. We need to turn to the bed of grace in the shelter of the Lord for soul rest.

Feeling spiritually worn? Turn to Jesus. Rest on His bed of grace. Find your soul rest in the shelter of the Lord. Share on X

I will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint” (Jeremiah 31:25, NIV1984).

Reflections: Have you made your spiritual bed? Have you experienced “soul rest”?

Julie Sunne

Hello, I'm Julie, an imperfect wife and mother of four. Life in this broken world is not always easy. Yet, joy can be found in each day through the grace and mercy of the Lord Jesus Christ.

I find it's easy for our day's blessings to get lost in its happenings. But God's "mercies never end" (Lamentations 3:22) and His "grace is sufficient" (2 Corinthians 12:9).

May the posts and pages on this site offer you a measure of peace and encouragement.
