Where to Shelter When Fierce Storms Strike

Under the trees and bushes we huddled. Each crack of thunder and flash of lightening urged us closer together.

Shivering and rain-soaked, we sang hymns of praise and gave thanks for the natural umbrella that offered at least a little protection from the driving rain. Finally, as the storm passed, we ventured back out on the now-calm lake. 

Although not protecting us from the whole of the storm, the trees sheltered us from the worst. In the cover of natural vegetation, our spirits were bolstered, and we found the courage to continue our journey. 

Shelter From Life’s Storms

Life brews storms of immense magnitude. And sometimes no manner of physical shelter can offer any hope. 

Yet in the shelter of God, there is always hope. In the shadow of His wings lay the enduring promise of a future. 

Huddling under the protection of the Almighty doesn’t prevent us from getting soaked or cold. Like the tree umbrella, His shelter doesn’t block out all the effects of the storm. Not because He can’t, but because it’s not what is ultimately best for us.

Yet seeking shelter in the Lord does provide hope and strength. His divine protection bolsters our spirits, allowing us to continue this journey of faith. 

Until all storms are quieted and all tears wiped away, God promises to be our refuge.

Fierce winds will come, stinging our faces and overwhelming our senses. (Remember the promise of trouble? [John 16:33]) But God will remain, arms outstretched—a bunker to ride out the worst of life’s storms—hallowed ground to rest and re-energize.

And when the storm abates, let His gentle whisper spur you on to continue walking boldly this path of Life.

“The one who lives under the protection of the Most High dwells in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” (Psalm 91:1-2)
