Chase Glimmers of Heaven When Life Becomes Less Than

Gold Brush Stroke

Chasing glimmers of heaven can help us cope when life becomes less than we want.

Life hurts. We want to feel better, to make things better. So we attempt to do just that—on our own, through our own understanding and strength.

By chasing the grander things.

We Tend to Chase the Grand Things

Oh how it tempts to run after the things that won’t last! The promotions. The mountaintop experiences. Bigger and more things. The fastest, sportiest, shiniest. The one better. The leap farther.

The grand things beckon.

And Why Not?

Bigger and more fill the void left by unexpected circumstances—temporarily. They bandage wounded hearts—for a while. Those things seem to bring happiness when life becomes less than what we want.

But not for long.

But That’s All Wrong, Isn’t It?

Then the job ends. The shiny fades. We have to return to the valley. The chase for bigger and more never end. There’s always one faster, sportier, and shinier.

What we have is never best, never farthest.

Yet Life Is Still Less Than

The hurt is real. Pain surrounds us. Unfairness eats away at our joy and contentment.

What keeps us moving? With ugliness a reality in our fallen world, what helps us wake each morning with a smile on our face and a song in our hearts?

It’s something beyond us.

Instead Chase Glimmers of Heaven

The days seldom play out how we want them to be. There’s too much doing. Too much whining. Too little money. Too little cooperation and grace. Too much hard.

Yet among the too much and the too little lie the good. A smile. A word. A glowing sunrise and glorious sunset. A cool drink. A warm hug.

A bit of heaven dripping down. Not perfect; not all how we want it to be. But traces of beauty. Stars twinkling above. The cool, clear air. A crackling fire. Hot dogs over flames. Gooey smores for the win. Wispy clouds against a deep blue backdrop.

They remind us of the beauty found in the jagged edges of yesterday. They whisper of the possibilities of today.

They point us to something far better and far greater to come.

We’re Blessed In and Through the Messy

Sadly, the days of our lives do hold messiness, but among that messy we find glimmers of heaven. Glimpses of goodness. Gifts from God.

Everyone knows. It doesn’t do any good to hide it; life is difficult. But thank God, He blesses us in it and through it!

Together let’s chase those glimmers of heaven.

“Don’t store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal.” Matthew 6:19

“Yet I call this to mind, and therefore I have hope: Because of the Lord’s faithful love we do not perish, for his mercies never end. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness!” Lamentations 3:21-23

Reflections: How do you deal with the hard things that pothole our days? What glimmers of heaven do you see shining through?

Bigger and more fill the void left by unexpected circumstances—temporarily. They bandage wounded hearts—for a while. Those things seem to bring happiness when life becomes less than what we want. But not for long. Share on X

Julie Sunne

Hello, I'm Julie, an imperfect wife and mother of four. Life in this broken world is not always easy. Yet, joy can be found in each day through the grace and mercy of the Lord Jesus Christ.

I find it's easy for our day's blessings to get lost in its happenings. But God's "mercies never end" (Lamentations 3:22) and His "grace is sufficient" (2 Corinthians 12:9).

May the posts and pages on this site offer you a measure of peace and encouragement.
