Notice the Miracles Around You

When the excitement and anticipation of the holidays give way to the tedium and monotony of daily routines, look for the miracles. They are there.

Miracles

Miracles. Isn’t that what Christmas is all about? A virgin mother. God coming to earth as a human baby.  Angels proclaiming to shepherds the birth of the Savior. Amazing and exciting stuff!

Then December turns into January and instead of miraculous we see mundane. Anticipation dissipates as routine returns to our days, and we quit looking with expectancy for the miracle.

But we get it wrong: Miracles aren’t relegated only to Christmas time. The birth of Jesus, God becoming man, is one of the most miraculous events, and we don’t want to miss it. But neither do we want to miss those that exist during the rest of the year.

Miracles Year-Round

“In the beginning God created” (Genesis 1:1). Yes, and He continues to create every day. In His creating, miracles and wonders continue.

We see them in the unfurling of the first bud in spring, the birth of an infant, the rising of the sun.

Miracles exist in a rainstorm or a gentle breeze, in the cycles of the moon, shooting stars, and the perfect distance between sun and earth.

They are seen in the first shoots of spring, the opening of flowers in the summer, the dropping of nuts in the fall, and the hibernation of squirrels in the winter.

Notice the Miracles

We don’t have to wait for Christmas or Easter to see miracles. They continue throughout the year, but sometimes we miss them because they’ve become normalized. May I encourage you to open your senses to the hand of the Lord in action?

As He keeps the universe in motion, the Almighty creates miracles daily. Are you noticing them?

They may not be as dramatic and exotic as the Savior of the world being born to a virgin, but they are glorious nonetheless, like the twinkling eyes of your daughter or the brilliant colors of the setting sun.

So look in the everyday obvious and routine. The miracles are there because the Lord is working.

“Then the Lord answered…
Can you bring out the constellations in their season
and lead the Bear and her cubs?
33 Do you know the laws of heaven?
Can you impose its authority on earth?
34 Can you command the clouds
so that a flood of water covers you?
35 Can you send out lightning bolts, and they go?
Do they report to you, ‘Here we are’?”
Job 38:1, 32-35 CSB

Prayer

Lord, too often when we think of miracles, we think of the greatest and the grandest: the birth and resurrection of Your Son. But You create daily, and miracles are in that creating. Open our eyes to see the miracles in the ordinary: the wonder of daily newness and growth and the continuation of what already exists. Sharpen our senses to experience the awe and grandeur of Your hand at work as we delight in Your majestic, creative, and caring nature.

Reminders: God daily works miracles in keeping the world in motion, in growing and nurturing. Are you noticing the miracles around you? Where do you see a miracle today?
