The One True Desire of Your Heart

Gold Brush Stroke

We wrongly think the desire of our heart is found in earthly things.

Confession time. Years ago, I used to think worship was relegated to Sunday mornings.

In my “convenient faith,” God commanded Sunday mornings, my selfish desires commanded pretty much the rest of the  week. I cringe at typing that today.

Heart Change

Now, I delight in worshiping throughout every day.

So what changed?

My heart did! And also my understanding of what a relationship with the God of the universe means.

Think about it!

“God made the earth by his power;
    he founded the world by his wisdom
    and stretched out the heavens by his understanding.
13 When he thunders, the waters in the heavens roar;
    he makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth.
He sends lightning with the rain
    and brings out the wind from his storehouses.” Jeremiah 10: 12-13

This God … this majestic and holy and almighty God … calls us into fellowship with Him!

The God of the universe desires to fellowship with us. The One who hung the moon and stars, the One who formed man from dust and woman from man’s rib and breathed life into both, He wants a relationship with us!

How can that be relegated to Sunday mornings?

“He is worthy of all praise and glory.” Isaiah 40:31 NIV

True Desire

Yes, but more than that, the longer I walk with this one true and gracious God, the more I desire to give Him praise and glory … freely and daily!

I’m learning to worship Him in the morning, noon, and nighttime.

I’m learning to reflect on His majesty when I see a bird soaring or a flower bud opening or a child laughing.

I’m learning to praise Him in the more difficult times, because worship changes perspective and in His presence there is “fullness of joy “ (Psalm 16:11).

When we truly know the Lord, our worship cannot be contained to a single day or a given time frame. We cannot place boundaries around it.

We discover that He is the answer to our heart’s desire. And praise pours forth from the depths of our souls.

As we learn the extent of His passion for us — the length and width, height and depth of His love for us (Ephesians 3:18) — we are compelled to live as King David did:

“My lips will glorify You
because Your faithful love is better than life.
So I will praise You as long as I live;
at Your name, I will lift up my hands.
You satisfy me as with rich food;
my mouth will praise You with joyful lips.” Psalm 63:3-5 HCSB

Uncontained Worship

As you press into the Lord. As you dwell with Him in your day to day activities. As you spend time in the Word and prayer, at corporate worship and personal and community Bible study, you will soon discover yourself unable to contain your worship.

It will have no bounds, but will pour forth in joyous praise, in both word and action.

We often think we need to have more of our desires met. And we think those desires are material things. Satan continues to feed us that lie.

But spend enough time with your Creator and you’ll find yourself desiring more of Him.

It’s then you’ll find yourself worshiping on the level of the great King David. Then you’ll find yourself glorifying Him throughout your day in all circumstances.

Then you’ll find that which you need the most: the desire of your heart.

Reflections: Deep down, what do you most desire? To be loved and accepted? To have hope when all seems bleak? In Christ you have it all!

If you desire to be in daily fellowship with your Lord, if you want your lips to glorify God in the good and the hard, then consider signing up for progress updates on my upcoming book release, an image-based devotional on praising God. Your story resonates with me, Julie. The longer I walk with God, the more desperate I become for His presence in my daily life. This means that worship time must break free from the four walls of the church and enter into my daily existence. I am so grateful for all of the beautiful worship music we have access to through services like Pandora. I just love filling my home with these songs as they completely transform the environment and transport me into His presence.

      I love listening to worship music too, Sarah. However, lately I’m finding myself most overwhelmed with God in the silence and in the whisper of the breeze, and the songs of the birds. He caresses our hearts in so many ways if we’ll simply allow ourselves to be open Him. Thank you for stopping and for the lovely comment.

    This line, “the longer I walk with this one true and gracious God, the more I desire to give Him praise and glory … freely and daily!”
    How very true!

      It’s such a beautiful blessing, Michelle! Glad you’re experiencing Him in this way too.

Julie Sunne

Hello, I'm Julie, an imperfect wife and mother of four. Life in this broken world is not always easy. Yet, joy can be found in each day through the grace and mercy of the Lord Jesus Christ.

I find it's easy for our day's blessings to get lost in its happenings. But God's "mercies never end" (Lamentations 3:22) and His "grace is sufficient" (2 Corinthians 12:9).

May the posts and pages on this site offer you a measure of peace and encouragement.
