Something to Remember When You Feel Unimportant

Something to Remember When You Feel Unimportant

Some seasons and some situations cause us to feel unimportant in the grand scheme of things. What we do with those feelings matter.

The call came unexpectedly. “Do you want to be done?”

As I digested the question, my answer came slowly. Yes and no. Covid-19 was spreading. I had one month left to work at a funeral home and was now being asked to quit sooner. I knew the risk of working in an essential business, one that would potentially require those I worked with (funeral directors) to come in direct contact with people who had died from the virus. Yet, I felt conflicted.

We weren’t sure how our daughter would handle the virus. Given her disabilities, likely not well. But truth be told, I felt important (and informed) working in a field that would unfortunately, but likely, play a big role in preventing spread of the virus.

A Part of Something Big and Important

After saying yes, I needed to be done, I felt a sadness … a loss. Processing that later, I realized I liked feeling needed. I liked feeling important. As a caregiver for my 21-year-old daughter, there are restrictions on my time and travel. And sometimes, I feel unimportant in the grand scheme of things.

I want to make a difference with my life. I want to feel a part of something big and important.

My unrest threatened to blind me to the blessings and opportunities of my current reality. So I began reminding myself that although I don’t always feel it, I am a part of something significant. I am a part of God’s plan. I am an instrument in His hands. And that’s always big and important!

From Unimportant to Worthy and Meaningful

As a homebound person, a caregiver, a socially isolating teacher, a behind-the-scenes worker, or even as a pastor of a church or an executive in a large corporation, are you feeling unimportant in your role? If so, please receive these reminders that are helping me during this season:

  • Created in God’s image, every human possesses value.
  • Every life lived in the service of the Lord holds great purpose; i.e. great importance.
  • A life surrendered to God, to do as He wills, is a life lived well.

Serve the Lord

We each play a role in God’s plan. Whether great or small in the eyes of man, our current station in life is worthy and meaningful to the Lord.

“And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him… Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ” (Colossians 3:1723-24).

Reflections: Are you feeling unimportant in your current role? If so, reread the Scripture verse above and remind yourself that you are an instrument in God’s hands. Now name one way you are serving the Lord in your current situation. Share it with us in the comments. And if you can’t think of one, share that in the comments as well, so we can help encourage you.

Julie: You are doing the most important job known to this world. You are a mother. Some friends of mine and I are abiding by the rules of sheltering-in-place because each of us have husbands who are compromised with health issues. You made the right decision for you and your daughter. Peace and blessings to you and yours.
