An Everlasting Flicker of Hope

Gold Brush Stroke

Candles flicker, threatening, … eventually their light will go out. But the Light of Christ will never be extinguished. We may lose sight of it, but it still is burning, an Everlasting Flicker chasing the shadows from every corner.

Searching for a Glimmer of Light

It is with heavy hearts we watch the darkness of this broken world close in. Shootings, carnage, war, horror–evil. The world reeks of it.

We struggle for a breath of fresh air while senseless tragedy after senseless tragedy pummels our senses. We search frantically for even the faintest glimmer of light.

And yet …

“Sing a new song to the Lord,” we are told, “sing His praise from the ends of the earth” (Isaiah 42:10).

Really? Who feels like singing? Who feels like smiling or laughing or going about our normal lives amid the darkness that suffocates, the evil that maims and kills?

But sing I will. I will sing from the highest mountaintops. I will praise His Holy name.  Not because I’m oblivious to the suffering around me or because I don’t care.

I will sing because He is still Lord and He is still faithful.

His Light is still burning. It hasn’t gone out. It never will.  Yahweh, the King of Kings is still very much alive … and in control.

Evil is drawing its last breath. Soon there will be Heaven on earth. Soon we will breathe in only the sweet smell of righteousness and love.

Words of Hope

Listen to the Words of hope from the Creator Himself and be encouraged:

“Arise, shine, for your light has come,
and the glory of the Lord shines over you.
For look, darkness covers the earth,
and total darkness the peoples;
but the Lord will shine over you,
and His glory will appear over you. …
Violence will never again be heard of in your land;
devastation and destruction
will be gone from your borders.
But you will name your walls salvation
and your gates, praise.
The sun will no longer be your light by day,
and the brightness of the moon will not shine on you;
but the Lord will be your everlasting light,
and your God will be your splendor.
Your sun will no longer set,
and your moon will not fade;
for the Lord will be your everlasting light,
and the days of your sorrow will be over.”

Isaiah 60:1-2; 18-20

Darkness is already defeated. One day soon, Light will push out every shadow. And it is in the praising of God that we will notice that Everlasting Flicker of hope.

Remembering the victims of the Newtown, Connecticut, shootings and the two Evansdale, Iowa, girls missing for months and recently found dead, and praying for their loved ones.

Reflections: Are you feeling overwhelmed with the sorrow of this world? Have you been focusing on the temporal or the everlasting flicker of Hope we have in Christ?

Julie Sunne

Hello, I'm Julie, an imperfect wife and mother of four. Life in this broken world is not always easy. Yet, joy can be found in each day through the grace and mercy of the Lord Jesus Christ.

I find it's easy for our day's blessings to get lost in its happenings. But God's "mercies never end" (Lamentations 3:22) and His "grace is sufficient" (2 Corinthians 12:9).

May the posts and pages on this site offer you a measure of peace and encouragement.
