Focus Is Important

Gold Brush Stroke

The other day I overheard a man saying bad news is the only news people want to hear. That’s why it’s plastered all over the media. Good news isn’t enticing.

Is that true? I certainly hope not. It isn’t for me. In fact I often have to turn off the news because it threatens to pull me down into the depths of despair.light

If I always dwell on the bad, how can I find the joy in daily living?

If through the years I’d concentrated on what my daughter’s disabilities prevented her from doing instead of the silliness and love she brings to our family, I’d never know her as the blessing she is.

If I’d only remembered the pain of each of my miscarriages instead of the nearness of God in my pain, I’d never have known the intimacy of drawing near to Him.

If all I focus on is the pain and sorrow, the hardships and horrors, I’d be frozen in fear:

I’d never notice the incredible grace poured out for us …

… I’d never experience the full extent of the love of my Savior, ….

… I’d never receive the benefits of a thankful heart … a joyful life.

… I’d never receive all God has for me.

So today, my dear friends, let’s focus our thoughts where God wants them: on Him and His goodness.

“Finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable—if there is any moral excellence and if there is any praise—dwell on these things” (Philippians 4:8).

Share in the Discussion: Do you have a tendency to dwell on the negative? Are their areas of your life where a more positive perspective could make a difference? What practical steps can you take to help focus your mind on good things?

Julie Sunne

Hello, I'm Julie, an imperfect wife and mother of four. Life in this broken world is not always easy. Yet, joy can be found in each day through the grace and mercy of the Lord Jesus Christ.

I find it's easy for our day's blessings to get lost in its happenings. But God's "mercies never end" (Lamentations 3:22) and His "grace is sufficient" (2 Corinthians 12:9).

May the posts and pages on this site offer you a measure of peace and encouragement.
