The Secret of Ordinary

Gold Brush Stroke

My life walks the line of ordinary. Nothing astonishing.

I haven’t traveled the world.

I haven’t spoken to thousands.

I haven’t written a best-selling book that changed lives (or any book, for that matter).

I haven’t given huge amounts of money or time to a life-altering cause.

And I don’t have friends or family in high places (although they are wonderful).

Each day sort of runs into the next. I do what needs to be done. It is easy to think such an ordinary life is expendable.

But when I look at my sons, no longer babes, all eager to take on the world, my view changes.

  • When I hear their prayers …
  • When one relates the amazing ways he’s seen God work, another tells how he shared the truth with one lost, and yet another asks the deep questions that grow faith …
  • When I hear how my daughter’s smile brought light to an otherwise dreary day …
  • When I take time to look at my life, not in light of my earthly accomplishments, but in what God is doing with such measly offerings …

It is then I see:  the ordinary remains anything but ordinary in God’s hands.

When done in His name, the Lord changes our measly to His majestic.

He does the extraordinary with the ordinary.

What ordinary has He transformed in your life?

“When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus” (Acts 4:13).

I love how our ordinary lives can be extraordinary. It just takes an open heart and eyes to see all God is doing in our midst. Thanks for sharing, Julie. 🙂
This post reminded me of one I just shared: Be Still, My Child: Something I Learned About My Father Through My Son.

“The Lord changes our measly to His Majestic!” I love this!

Great insight Julie. It is in the ordinary we have extraordinary impact. Yesterday in my journal I wrote down the same habit you just made (not because I was doing it but because I was failing to do so!) …”When done in His name” … the Lord changes our measly to His majestic.

It’s amazing how quickly another brother or sister in Christ like you sends me the same message I felt called to put in writing just yesterday!

Indeed, Brent, divinely orchestrated, I’d say!

Another great post, Julie. I love this statement: “the ordinary remains anything but ordinary in God’s hands.” So beautiful!

Hello, I'm Julie, an imperfect wife and mother of four. Life in this broken world is not always easy. Yet, joy can be found in each day through the grace and mercy of the Lord Jesus Christ.

I find it's easy for our day's blessings to get lost in its happenings. But God's "mercies never end" (Lamentations 3:22) and His "grace is sufficient" (2 Corinthians 12:9).

May the posts and pages on this site offer you a measure of peace and encouragement.
