Believe, Even When You Cannot See

Believe, Even When You Cannot See

God uses our strengths, but just as effectively, He uses our weaknesses. And trusting Him in our weakness is living out our faith in its truest form. It’s saying we believe, even when things don’t look so promising.

The easy, the comfortable, the known, that’s where we want to be … and stay. We don’t want to be shaken up. Who wants to invite pain? Who wants the hard?

Yet God seems to do His most important work in us when we are shaken. Look at a small sample of biblical examples.

God Works in Our Struggles

Moses had to give up all he knew in Egypt to save his skin and then do the exact same thing to go back to Egypt to save others’ skin. In the process, he learned to trust God for his very existence

God called Jonah to go into a depraved, wicked town to convey His warning. He resisted, but soon found that he couldn’t hide from God. His eventual obedience helped save the people of Nineveh from destruction.

It seemed from the time Abraham turned 80, the Lord kept him on the move and in flux, even asking some incredibly difficult things of the patriarch. Abraham’s faith grew as he followed God through the valleys and over the mountaintops.

God asked Gideon to go into battle with far too few soldiers. At first uncertain, Gideon eventually learned he could trust God.

King David lamented all the losses, uncertainties, and upheavals in his life. Yet, ultimately, he found the Lord faithful to provide.

Naomi and Ruth lost all they had except each other and had to travel to another country, penniless and without a plan, to start over. God, however, had a plan and provided more than they could have imagined.

None of these biblical characters seemed to welcome their life upheaval. In fact, many fought against it.

However, when we read those accounts closely, we see the biggest transformation, the greatest growth, from the biggest shakeups, the most difficult challenges. And we see a faithful God providing all they couldn’t.

Believe, Even Then

But it’s hard, oh so hard, to have our easy, comfortable lives flipped upside down. Still, at some point, we’ll be asked to deal with difficulty.

So how do we handle those seasons we can’t actually handle? How do we cope?

When we’re asked to trust God during a challenging and upheaved season of life, we must make a conscious effort to park our faith in the supernatural over the natural. To believe what the Lord has promised. To acknowledge our inability and welcome God’s ability—His grace to transform us and redeem our circumstances.

Each of us is a work in progress. Trusting God to do great work in our great challenges takes time and a continual surrendering of what we see and know.

By Faith

When all looks dark, we trust the light is there.

When we struggle to find one positive, we revisit Jesus’ death and resurrection.

When we can barely pull a breath, we let the Lord breathe for us.

When all we have are tears, we borrow a smile from God.

When we have nothing left to give, we rest in the shelter of the Lord.

By faith, we trust God to be what we are not, to do what we cannot, to provide what we have not. He promises, and He fulfills His promises … always. We believe, even when we cannot see.

Reflections: What are you trusting God for? Where are you needing to believe God for, even though you cannot see?
